  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey, lean
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, extra virgin

For the Creamy and Cheesy Layers:

  • 15 oz ricotta cheese, whole milk or part-skim
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped

For the Lasagna Structure:

  • 9 oven-ready lasagna noodles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onions for 5 minutes, then add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Add ground beef or turkey and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, ½ cup mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, and parsley.
  6. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the baking dish. Layer 3 lasagna noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, and meat sauce. Repeat layers.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For added flavour, try mixing shredded provolone with mozzarella. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
