Instructions
1. Prepare the onions: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper. Cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Remove and set aside.
2. Form the patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt and pepper. Optionally, add garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce. Divide into two portions and shape into patties.
3. Cook the patties: In the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high and add more butter. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side, adding cheese during the last minute.
4. Assemble the sandwich: Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer caramelized onions and cheese-topped patties. Top with the other slices, buttered side out.
5. Grill the sandwiches: Clean the skillet and return to medium heat. Grill sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
6. Serve: Let the sandwiches rest for a minute before slicing. Serve warm with fries or a salad.
Notes
Consider adding garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, or hot sauce for extra flavor. Serve with crispy fries or a light salad.
